Action-Research

This research is characterised by a participatory, interactive, reflective, and problem-focused approach that culminates in actionable outcomes. The findings will inform training and workshops, improving insights and comprehension.

ICRA's action-research initiative is a vital effort to understand and transform the complex dynamics of rainfed farming, which supports millions of people across extensive geographical regions. We recognise that land, the primary site of production, is susceptible to elemental forces, market fluctuations, labor issues, and various factors that affect agricultural sustainability, the livelihoods of small farmers, environmental health, genetic modification, and nutrition.

Through our research, we aim to understand these changes and implement evidence-based interventions that foster positive transformation. Our in-house magazine regularly publishes our findings, reflecting our commitment to transparency and knowledge sharing. Unlike traditional academic research, our action research is participatory, dynamic, and solution-oriented, prioritising rigour and objectivity while embracing a paradigm shift.

Over the years, ICRA has explored critical issues such as food security, agricultural labour, seed sovereignty, farmer suicides, the economics of BT cotton, mixed cropping, and small farm economics. This systematic and periodic assessment allows us to refine our interventions and actions, contributing to a more just and sustainable food system.

In summary, our initiatives include:
- Conducting participatory research with farmers to identify and address specific challenges in organic farming under rainfed conditions.
- Studying and documenting local knowledge and practices related to organic and rainfed agriculture.
- Developing and testing innovative solutions for organic manures, pest management, and designs for conserving indigenous seeds.
- Analysing and sharing findings to inform policy and practice changes.
